telnet via dialup modem

Hello!
Noob here.

So. I'm just jumping into this after....oh, about 40 years or so.

I just got a new alarm system that doesn't use my landline anymore.

Question:

I have an old Atari 800 with an 830 modem. I would LOVE to jump into this retro-computer thing with the BBSs of old.

I STILL have my landline, and wanted to get feedback from you experts. I'm paying 90 bucks a month for it. It's worth it for me to tinker around with; but are there places to dial into?
If there just a few down to none, I'm guessing there isn't and I may as well cancel it. I have a feeling that it's a one way trip, and once I cancel it I probably can't get it back. I'm probably the only person in the neighborhood that still has a landline. It's saved me a couple of times during blackouts. But again, this is purely for nostalgia and nothing else.

I also have an IMSAI 8080 clone that I put together that would be really cool to use for this sort of thing

..or am I the only one that wants to go hardcore with this? I figure if your going to do it, do it right -at least for a little while.

any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

How are long distance charges on landlines these days?

The charges seem reasonable on VoIP lines, but I haven’t been on the real PSTN in almost 20 years.
