Major BBS and windows xp
Welp,
I pulled the old major bbs out of the box in the closet and want to install it with my windows xp. Since i read that it is now possible... yay!
One problem.
how does one configure the IP addresses? I tried all different ways and cant get it to work with telnet. I think perhaps i have the wrong info added there, ie the DNS and the actual IP address needs to be the one in the router? And the gateway address is direct from the router so i dont see why its not working right.
I read a few threads on here about WG but not major bbs. I have the dos packet so that it will run ok and it seems to load which is nice, but the telnet isnt working. i never needed telnet before with it along time ago...and i cant find all my docs for this which is annoying, i only have 1 of the 2 books that came with it, if anybody has the answer i would appreciate it... just tryin to get it to work for fun.
thanks

Hey I will try and help, what version of the MajorBBS do you have? v6.x and if so do you have the ICO and is it installed?
And in the hardware setup did you set channel group #1 to Telnet?
In the hardware setup you need to set the following options;
Option 2 - set the channel group to Telnet
Option 4 - your starting telnet channel
Option 5 - your ending telnet channel
Option 395 - the IP of the bbs computer (if needed direct all telnet traffic to that IP in your router)
Option 396 - The netmask needs to be set 255.255.255.0 in most cases
Option 397 - The bbs computers default gateway (192.168.1.1 or the IP of your router)
Option 399 - Your primary DNS (if not sure what that is just look at the status of your network card and click support then details and it will show it)
Option 400 - Your secondary DNS (if not sure what that is just look at the status of your network card and click support then details and it will show it)
Option 403 - this is the host name of your bbs (majorbbs is a good default)
Option 404 - this is the domain name for your bbs (mine is gcommlive.com, if you dont have one then goto http://myip.us/ and set one up)
I hope this helps and let me know and I will do my best to help you get your system up and running

Telnet not working
Welp, i checked the card and it gave me the following:
IP 192.168.0.1
255.255.255.0 mask
gateway 192.168.0.1
DNS 192.168.0.1
only one DNS was listed.
so i put in 0.0.0.0 into the secondary field.
its still not working.
Ive tried the other IP address that showed me online when i checked online for it. i tried putting tha tone it like 76.167.000.00 etc and kept the other stuff the same and it said Connection Refused when i tried to telnet in. I tried to telnet in with the regular 192. address and that timed out.
now mind you i am telneting in on the same computer as the bbs is set up on, is that a problem? Will it only accept out of network telnets? I was thinking that only someone from the outside will be able to get in and i willhave to login locally.
Ive had other bbs's set up synchronet, wwiv etc and they all worked with my telnet so i know that the telnet is fine.
I do not have a static IP tho, but thats why i use dyndns.org.
Any help you can give, im completely stumped.
I have TCP/IP from Vircom with this bbs, i actually found the manual, but its not much help im afraid, as its so old.
I am also using Ndis3pkt as my packet driver... if that is needed to know.
Other than that, its interesting to log back in locally, but if no one can log in outside whats the point really.

everything is setup, I normally run synchronet.Talonp wrote:do you have the telnet traffic coming into your router pointing to the BBS IP?
is the router connected to the BBS computer? if so you may need to have another system to telnet in ....what is your dyndns.org domain and I will try and access it from the out side.
this is the first I even got wg2 to answer telnet
even at all. err, on winxp sp2.
I have only 1 computer connected to the router, where as i have a laptop (not bbs related) doing a wireless connection to it,
so yes the BBS computer (which is this one i am now) is connected to the router.
So if u are saying that the bbs computer is not direct.
Should i get rid of the router all together and then try it again? i could just plug this computer directly into the cable modem... my wife wont like that when she cant get on the internet tho with her laptop. but either way for testing purposes i could try it.
did you look at my settings to see what you thought about that in my previous post about the IPs etc?
Thanks

frcorey wrote:yeah, try it without the router.
also, does your router and modem have NAT?
are all the ports open and redirected for the bbs?
what about your OS firewall?
I had to open and redirect ports on my modem and router and OS firewall.
Not sure about the NAT
Also, i have ports open for telnet and other things, just like for synchronet, since u are probably familliar with that, then you know what i mean. The OS firewall is open for those ports as well, like i said in a previous post, if synchronet works, then the telnet port works
Explain how you are opening and redirecting ports on your MODEM as well as your Router.... im not sure what u are talking about here.
thanks

BUT, if he is not redirecting 192.XXX.XXX.XXXTalonp wrote:ok if you have a laptop on the network with the bbs computer you should be able to telnet in from the laptop...have you tried to do that yet?
There is no reason to change your settings because they are correct for the configuration you have described.
So try to telnet in from the laptop
he can't telnet in to his net to a internal private IP. those addresses don't resolve to the outside.
frcorey wrote:depends what you set in the NAT config.tonicfan wrote:Which IP address should be forwarded to the telnet?
Right now in my router the main 192.168.0.1 is pointing to port 23 for telnet.
TF
my router uses 192.168.1.1 so I made my address
192.168.1.2 and set NAT to foward the bbs port calls to there.
I have a Dlink DI524 router if that helps you, there is a firewall on the router and all bbs related ports are open.
TF
his computer is the main system Telnet traffic should goto that machine because the modem is connected to that computer. the system he is on for the bbs is also the router ...his internal ip, gateway and dns are all 192.168.0.1 so if he telnets from the laptop to 192.168.0.1 or telnets to the real ip he should work. If you give me the real IP I will try from the outside for you.
Ok your router should be IP 192.168.0.1 and you would used that for the Gateway and DNS on the PC, the PC's IP should be set to obtain one automatically. you PC IP would not be 192.168.0.1 that is the router.
And as frcorey was pointing out and it went over my head was that in your router you will need to redirect incoming telnet to the IP of the PC.
First make sure that you have the DHCP turned on unless you are doing static IPs, then set the starting and ending IP addresses, now click on virtual server and select the advanced tab, enable the virtual server and configure the name, the IP of the PC, the protocol type telnet, set the public port to 23 and set the schedule to always. then telnet from your laptop to the bbs pc's IP or to the real IP of the router and you should work fine.
Let me know

Since i already had synchronet set up, all of this is correct already, but here is what it looks like
Telnet 192.168.0.100 TCP 23/23 always
that will work for synchronet to have people sign in, and i can sign in with telnet via my own computer or the laptop via both IPs including the localhost 127.0.0.1
Unless im missing something, its set right, now in Mbbs, the IP should be 192.168.0.100? or the regular IP that i get fro whatismyip.com
TF
Hmm what should the starting and ending IPs then, if different than now which are, cuz the starting and ending are in the firewall, not in the virtual server settings that just says Private IP as i indicated above.Talonp wrote:First make sure that you have the DHCP turned on unless you are doing static IPs, then set the starting and ending IP addresses, now click on virtual server and select the advanced tab, enable the virtual server and configure the name, the IP of the PC, the protocol type telnet, set the public port to 23 and set the schedule to always. then telnet from your laptop to the bbs pc's IP or to the real IP of the router and you should work fine.

FIXED! Well, kinda
Wow! it was the packet driver. somehow the packet driver was looking in the wrong place.
For some odd reason, thus far, i can login to it, not of course the real test will be if it can be done remotely, which of course i will test after i sleep for a year.
But i think it is ok. i will have to have somebody telnet in soon, but for now, and xmas, there will be a break.
Rock on.

ACK!

Ive tried this one before, cuz i read it would work. but it doesnt show up in there, which is why i used the other one. I dont know why it doesnt show.
Then when i run the .exe file in dos it lists 0 adapters and fails to work with the bbs.

Which is the IPX driver?
i have a NWLink IPX/SPX driver but thats been disabled the whole time.
Then there is TCP/IP for Microsoft v6 and a network monitor driver
also Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
No other IPX that i can see.
Re: Telnet not working
P 192.168.0.1 is the internal IP address of your private network created by your firewall. Your router uses a different IP to communicate with the outside world. You should have your router point all telnet traffic (telnet port) to the internal private address of your BBS - 192.168.? Using IPCONFIG /ALL in the command box (DOS BOX) will let you know what your BBS computer address is on the internal network. You usually forward telnet using a port address - so make sure your router is forwarding the same port your BBS is listening on.tonicfan wrote:Welp, i checked the card and it gave me the following:

You shouldn't need a static IP to get it working; static IP only helps with others trying to find you.
Also; where are you trying to telnet to your bbs from? If you are inside the router you will address your client differently than if you are outside your router in the internet.

You shouldn't need a static IP to get it working; static IP only helps with others trying to find you.
Also; where are you trying to telnet to your bbs from? If you are inside the router you will address your client differently than if you are outside your router in the internet.
TD
The previous thing said to use the IP address of the computer.
I havent messed with this much, maybe ill login to your bbs and maybe you can give me your settings and we will talk about it. I am moving next week and im thinking about switching my bbs to mbbs as opposed to synchronet so im trying to get it to work this week.
Any other help you can give is great!
Plus the system is loading pretty heavy, is there anyway to reduce that? thats pretty nutso

Type in your ip or name that you have your Wg server configered to. Be sure if your on a dynamic IP you have to setup a DNS relay like dyndns to reroute your IP and bbs name. Other problems could lay in cfg, hardware setup or in the router config (be sure its set to send and allow telnet requests from the web to the ip of the WG server).
What version of WG are running? and what operating system would help us all here to help you.
As for the "lag" its dependant on how many modules you are loading, and your CNF settings and hardware settings will effect the load time of WG. Watch the response time, it will take 2-3 minutes to get up to full speed. My WG2dos runs about 1ms take it about 5-8 min to get their this is due to majormudd. WG32NT runs about 6 ms and is upto speed in about 2 minutes, it runs the web service and many other modules but none as heavy as Majormud.
here is some additional links for help

I'll be around this afternoon and eveing if you want some help, just page me on my bbs (http:// or telnet://)

Re: Major BBS and windows xp
when using the AIO channels are TCP/IP when using MajorTCP/IP channels are TELNETtonicfan wrote:Welp,
I pulled the old major bbs out of the box in the closet and want to install it with my windows xp.
I have the dos packet so that it will run ok and it seems to load which is nice, but the telnet isnt working. i never needed telnet before with it along time ago...and i cant find all my docs for this which is annoying, i only have 1 of the 2 books that came with it, if anybody has the answer i would appreciate it... just tryin to get it to work for fun.
thanks
TF
IP address is your private ip given by the router
DNS and gateway set to your router ip (router will push DNS)
go online.
i have tested this with mbbs and wg1/2
packet driver
Welp,
I think its the packet driver, after putting everything on hold for awhile im back at it, and it just doesnt connect, ive even remoted into my computer and work and tried to telnet in and it doesnt work.
I guess now im screwed on this but i dont care much id love to get the major bbs to work but i dont think its possible.
Where can i buy a worldgroup system from? Or better yet a used one? Is there a site with people selling it? I have specific games i want, but i dont want to spend $500 on it. Anybody know?
And if anyone has any idea why my majorbbs still isnt working even after all the suggestions and the correct config please let me know.

I don't know if I can help, but I'll try but I need a few questions answered again so I get a clear picture what you have going on.
What version of Major BBS / WG are you using?
Who is your Internet Provider?
What Brand and Model is your Router?
What Operating System are you using for your BBS/WG Server?
What Anti-Virus / Firewall Software are you using if any.
What Brand / Model Network Card do you have installed?
This is a start, I may have more questions.

What version of Major BBS / WG are you using? MajorBBS 6.25 with TCP/IP
Who is your Internet Provider? Brighthouse Networks but its timewarner technically
What Brand and Model is your Router? Dlink 524 i think
What Operating System are you using for your BBS/WG Server? Win XP home edition
What Anti-Virus / Firewall Software are you using if any. I have AVG anti virus, but the firewall is hardware on the router.
What Brand / Model Network Card do you have installed? NVIDIA
This shit has killed me i was up til 9 am one day working on this for 9 straight hours and it still doesnt work. I had a world group demo tha tworked with no problem at all, so i know its the packet driver.
I use DanLan's packet driver. The other one doesnt work, please read the previous posts to get a better idea.

You may want to try a different network card. D-link 530-ct , 538-tx or a old 3com card. Some other cards will work also. I have a Dlink 530-ct running WG2 DOS to connect to my wg32NT. You can usually find them at used hardware shop for a buck or 2.tonicfan wrote:What version of Major BBS / WG are you using? MajorBBS 6.25 with TCP/IP

Also as for testing try both your bbs name and IP # from telnet browser.

for WG2/WG1/MBBS i find that 3COM cards model 3cxxxx are the best.Stoneslinger76 wrote:You may want to try a different network card. D-link 530-ct , 538-tx or a old 3com card. not only are their packet and ODI drivers superior to the others but the connection isnt sluggish like i found on most.
in autoexec.bat have this:
@echo off
LH LSL.COM
LH 3c90x.com
LH ODIPKT.COM
LH 3c90xpd.com -i 0x70
Well forget MajorBBS
Welp, I tanked my majorbbs idea, its just not working.
Welp with Questman's help i was able to get some stuff together for the new WorldGroup. Much thanks to him.
Its a work in progress and remember its a ANNEX to my main Synchronet system. Im actually running them together.
You can access the WG at tohs.dyndns.org:2323 (yes thats port 2323)
And you can access the synchronet on port 23 at tohs.dyndns.org
Glad to see it working and very pleased that now i can work on it some more in my spare time.
All we need now is Galactic Empire for Worldgroup and everyone will be happy.
Thanks to all who tried to assist me in the past year its been a struggle, i gave up 500 times, thought i had it going, then it died again, so now im glad i got this rolling.
Hope to see u online.

I was experiencing the same exact thing - connect to black screen and disconnected with it showing in the audit trail as same.
I tried an intel VE 100 with packet driver from Intel's recommended site. I tried a Realtek 8139 with Realteks packet driver. I tried a 3Com 3c905-TX with packet driver from 3com, and none of the three would work. I tried to install the BBS clean without Vircom TCP and to configure the telnet capability built into WG2 Dos, then tried with TCP.
Then I formatted the drive and installed Win98 command line only, reinstalled everything in DOS and even under native DOS I get the exact same thing - except now I don't even get an IP address.
I'd really hate to have to bust out my old all in one 486 to get the BBS back online, but if that's what it takes I guess I have no choice. It has an ISA lan card so no more Error accessing 0xA GPFs.
Edit: I got an old machine with an ISA nic set up and connecting fine. Disregard.
