What this forum is about

Post by OhASys »

I just want to take the time to refocus these forums. This site is for the restoration of The Major BBS(WG) as it used to be, a BBS. Yes, we all know the confusion of the name with Netvillage. They have taken the software in a different direction than what this site is.

We are focused on just the BBS side of things here, end of story. We are not trying to build this into a web-based social system, the project is for us who still enjoy running a BBS as a hobby, end of story.

With that being said, please keep the topics here focused on THAT. The BBS itself, and its add-ons. I know some of you have side projects, and working on stand alone versions of things, and that's your project, not part of what this site is about.

Also, issues/problems/questions about the Netvillage versions should not be discussed here.

Again, I don't care if you run theirs, or work on your own side projects, but please, remember, this site is a community for the BBS side of things, and the BBS side ONLY :).

Thanks!

at the same time you have to realize this is a web community of mainly Sysops joined together by a common interest, maybe change it to note please stay on topic within the selected topics and off topic posts in the off topic channels?

I honestly hope I do not have to get that granular with the post. Common sense should prevail over all posts.

yeah but discussions take their own turns like they do in a real conversation
we could be discussing majormud and 8 posts later it take a turn to crossroads of the elements and next thing you know we're talking about java becuase of the crossroads java port. but maybe its the java keywords that brought a google searcher here, take GreaterMud for instance, a recreation of majormud on a standalone front, we discussed it years back and because of that we gained like 4-5 new members incusing one of their core developers.

I think you're both right, but we should try to moderate topics enough so that people interested in reading a topic know what to expect. We should try to keep focused on Galacticomm software too.

TWGS etc still is relevant, but mainly with running it with/from WG. I'm not out to do what NetVillage has done -- evolve the platform into something entirely not a BBS. Frankly, MBBS/WG is not nearly as good as public open source components that are off the shelf these days at email, forums, file transfers, chats, polls, etc. But there never was and never will be a better BBS program!

what nmade WG so badass was the addon system, but as for topic moderation just do like blizzard does, when a topic begins to stray off course either:

a) move it to the right place
b) delete it and point to an existing topic already
c) inform them to stay on topic

twgs is still nice thats why i made that modded rlogin client that put system id's in front of your name so one twgs system could house many systems using duplicate usernames, so the sysop account from my server plays and the sysop account from your system plays our names would simply be Sysop2331 and Sysop0865 and to clean it up so not just anyhow could generate a system id is the rlogin client could hash something out from the bturno value or it could be hardcoded as the sysop requested a copy.

twgs is a great way to play tw2002 on wg and according to JP twgs can be used as a portal to other games too,m he is gonna send me a skeleton kit when he gets some time.
