Just a lost soul wanting a piece of Galactic Empire

Post by dance »

I've read through some of the forums, but it's difficult to piece everything together. I read the Galacitc Empire was GPL'd, but I haven't found it really "available" anywhere.

It comes down to this. I played GE a bit when I was younger, but never really got to sink my teeth into it. I'd like to have a local version where I could play it until I beat it. Just me and the computer. I'm not really interested in playing online with other people, I just want a local version that I could play around in. I see that there are various versions of MBBS, DOS UNIX NT... I could run whatever in a VMWare environment.

My question is, what is available for download, how can I get it, and does it allow me to play GE on my computer? I don't know if I'm just asking for the impossible, so please let me know. I assume I need MajorBBS since GE was just a "door" add-on. I read about some company going bankrupt, and someone else buying the rights to the software but not having the software.

I really don't care what version it is, I just want to be able to actually get somewhere in the game without being destroyed the minute I stepped outside the protective sector. It would be nice if it didn't crash often, but that's not a requirement.

If anyone can help steer me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it.

The easy way for you to play is to (insert plug here) telnet to my BBS!
I have two games running.
telnet://bbs.retrobbsgames.net

But if you want to run it the easy way is to run it on wg2.0(DOS).
I dont know if it has been ported to NT3.X yet.

Any idea where I can find that (GE and WG2.0)?

Well, WG2.0 is commercial software and isn't released to the general public. A license would need to be aquired in one way or another (BY LEGAL MEANS). You may want to speak with QuestMan on these forums as he is the legal holder of Galacticomm.

I understand your feeling, the same happened to me years ago when I tried to play a game called Infinity Complex, I never got anywhere, was killed off by other users repeatdly...

However, you should try various systems...Worldgroup and MajorBBS are commericial programs, and getting a copy will require some investment. Additionally you will have to invest in a copy of the game(s) you might want to try...it would seem crazy to go to the trouble to set up a system for only one game.

Anyway..try looking at some of our systems here. I just installed games on my system and they are currently sitting empty...so you would be the only one playing Galactic Wars right now. A lot of us are former Sysops trying to get the old BBS standard back up again :)

Access is free, time unlimited.
