Problems with Majormud update

Post by Malakai »

Well, I've finally found an updated DOS WG1/2 majormud update to 1.11o, and when I do everything it says (database recovery, then copy files, install, another database recovery), run the install, the install appears to work fine (after several hours of database conversion)

but when I run the offline recovery afterwards (just like it says) I get btrieve error 10 on wccusers.dat. I've run the conversion process several times and can't get anything to work.

I've looked up the btrieve error codes, but what I'm wondering is if this update is suppose to work on this version (1.11e) of wg, or if you're suppose to go through a bunch of updates from 1.11e, f, g, h, etc before you run this.

I am not sure but I believe you have to go thru each update. :? run the bbs after each update and nightly maintenance, then continue to the next update. Entering your mudule codes after all updated, then check the rooms above sysop support to see if the mod's are enabled.

that's kind of what I was afraid of... It can take 2-3 hours per update, and even then, I can't find the updates from one version to the next..

Well, here is the update to put into your collections. I know mmud dos updates are very hard to find now. Maybe one day, some of us can find a piece here and there and put all of the pieces together and have something that works.

It's been a while since I looked into this, but I remember talking to Mud Support about it several years ago and it seems like you only need to do a conversion when you go from e to j. You can go from j to o with no data conversions. Something like that anyway. You can check the release notes on o and it should tell you which releases required data conversion.

Do you happen to have the 1.11j update?

Sorry. I ended up starting up a fresh game rather than upgrading (hard drive crash) so I never got the interim releases. Don't remember for sure which ones you need. Not sure if it's actually j or not. Just remember there were like 2 different conversions. I think it was e and j but am not positive. But I'm pretty sure you don't have to hit every single release to get to o.

No problem.. I ended up putting 1.11e online because it was the highest version most of us could find, and now since I have some players on it, they'd probably be pretty pissed off if I had to delete them to put a new version up, but that may eventually have to happen. Who knows?

If you have any newer versions than 1.11e, even the full versions, can you upload them somewhere for some of us to get for our archives?

thanks

Well, after e-mailing a bunch of sysops and gameport, etc, I finally got ahold of Shannon's personal e-mail address, and she replied this morning and said that she couldn't believe I was running such an "old" version of majormud and said that she didn't even know if gameport had all of the conversion updates for it and that it may be better just to start the game over from scratch, although she will look to see if they have the files somewhere..

I can confirm that any release at 1.11g and lower, you have to have 1.11j then upgrade to whatever version you want. Shannon sent me all of the files except for J, because I guess they've gotten lost in time..

So, does any one have the full version of 1.11j? It should start with "wccwg" not wccnt or wccds... This should be my last link between getting something going.

BTW, Here's a link to the latest wg1/2 dos majormud version:

Hopefully, it isn't too late for some of you who may eventually consider running majormud in DOS. Supposedly, if you have 1.11h or higher, you can upgrade to any version, but always back up the files first, because I'm not going to be responsible for something that goes wrong lol...

I knew it was something like that. Glad you were able to find the version you needed. I am going to download it just in case I decide to go back to WG 2. I may end up doing that just because I have so many registered games for it and can't get licenses for WG 3.2

HAHAHA... I Guess the Joke's on me, almost the only DOS MajorMud sysop in the world.....

You know how on the file_id.diz of the majormud games, it says limited testing has been done? Metro/Gameport/Shannon left out some critical files that would make it impossible to run these so-called full versions of the game. I'm not even sure if they'd work as an upgrade from a previous game.

I tried mixing and matching different versions of the files from the O update version, and it wouldn't work.. So, these new files are garbage
