I've now starting to attempt to setup an worldgroup as an email server, and it just doesn't want to send or receive email. Do I need some type of external mail server to feed my mail to worldgroup?

i dont believe so. i use synchronet as my email/nntp handler i just do send mail as my isps email server <<smtp.comcast.net>>
i use port 25

pop3 my ip address port 110

alot of people try to send it from their own ip but if you dont have a true smtp server running it cannot relay cause it dont know how.

as i said i dont use the wg mail servers

try making your isp smtp server your sendmail or smarthost and see what it does.

There are some issus with Mail (SMTP) and DNS that you have to address.

In order for your bbs to get mail it has to be listed with an MX record for your domain. MX record tell other servers on the internet what server handles mail for your domain.

Then your BBS has to be set up to accept as local mail (not relay) mail with your internet address.

To send outgoing mail (smtp) you need to have your ip number reverse resolve to the domain name listed in the MX record for your server. Most mail server will reject mail if the reverse dns fails. If you are on a cable modem then you sould be able to relay your outgoing email through your cable providers smtp server. To send mail directly with out relaying your server needs to be a smarthosting server. Vircoms MajorTCP is and I think then the Gcomm ver is as well. A smart server knows how to look up the MX records for a domain. ie mail.ccsnet.com is the server to send email to for bbs.retorbbsgames.net. But again with out a reverse dns most of your outgoing email will be rejected.
If you are on dsl you may be screwed as here Verizon block all mail relayed through their server if the return email address is not a verizon address. That sucks. If that is the case I can open a port for you on one of my servers so you can send outgoing email.

Well, I know that it works on synchronet, if I turn on the mail server on it, but it sounds like worldgroup may be handling mail differently. I am on DSL. So, that could be a problem too. Any of those scanned manuals would be great.

There is a segment in CNF that allows you to specify Internet email, however, it is not seemingly receiving or sending mail from the system to the Internet? Is there something in Vircom's software that needs to be setup? If I type "INT:someone@someaddress.com" (obivously it would be someone's real email after the "INT:") it goes no where and the board errors saying that that is not a valid id on the system. By the same token, sending mail to sysop@teobbs.dyndns.org from outside the board, the board does not ever receive that message and so far it has not bounced either.

Hope someone can help me figure this one out. We have Telnet of course!

wont' work, look at your audit trail, it should say
needs wg1 or higher.

wll, I tested versions of tcpip from 1.7X to 2.2X and can't get email working, neither the pop3 or smtp moduals.
I did notice thou, if it would work when you try to email someone with the
INT or IN prefixes i.e. INT:corey@tsgc.dyndns.org it will say email doesn't excist or something, meaning the email engine is not loading/functioning.
I would like to get it running also. I like mbbs 6.25 it runs faster than wg 1 or 2. well, let me know if you get it working.

Looked on Novell's site and Google and no luck finding it (presumably for DOS). Is there such an animal? **OR** Is the MHS some kind of add on for MBBS 6.25?

it's in my wg2. ah, thats why it don't work in mbbs 6, ha! I have a idea now. wg uses a different message system. hmm, wonder if I can compile
those moduals of my wg2 for my mbbs 6?

Setting Up The Major BBS for Global MHS 2.0
-------------------------------------------

We suggest the BBS Sysop and the LAN Administrator both read this
file and Chapter 13 of The Major BBS System Operations Manual before
making any changes on either side. Schedules permitting, both of you
should be present on both sides of this installation.

The procedure for configuring Global MHS is similar to the procedure
for configuring MHS 1.5 as described in System Operations Manual,
but there are a few places where Global's configuration will differ.

For one, note that Global MHS supports a "long name" and a "short name"
for gateways, workgroups, and users. You should always create names
which fit into SHORT name fields, and use the precise same name strings
for long name fields as well.

On the MHS side
---------------

First, the LAN Administrator needs to create an MHS gateway for the BBS.
Specify that this is an SMF-70 gateway.
Create a default workgroup for it with the same name as the gateway.

Create a user with a name of "MBBS" on the gateway.
Create a user's workgroup for it with the same name as the gateway's
default workgroup.

Specify a gateway command in the form:
-F<outbound message directory> (no spaces)
Example: -FG:\FROMBBS

On The Major BBS side
---------------------

Follow the steps in Chapter 13 of The Major BBS System Operations
Manual for configuring the BBS to work with MHS, with this exception:

In step 6, do NOT copy the file SMFSEND.EXE into INPOST.EXE. Do NOT.
Instead, copy the Galacticomm-supplied INPOST.EXE into the gateway's
PUBLIC directory.

In Configuration Options (#4 on the Introductory Menu), be sure that
option GTWNME contains the gateway's name.

In Configuration Options (#4 on the Introductory Menu), be sure that
option OUTFIL contains the full drive:\path of the outbound
file attachments subdirectory (PARCEL). See page 183 in The Major BBS
System Operations Manual.

Dedicating an MHS gateway host
------------------------------

Finally, set up a LAN workstation (a third machine, not the BBS computer
nor a Novell file server) to act as a dedicated MHS gateway host.

On this workstation run the Novell-supplied GWDEMON.EXE program
(see the Netware Global Messaging Administration manual for more details
on GWDEMON). This workstation must have the same network drive mappings
as the BBS computer. You may want to create a network account
specifically for the BBS and have both the BBS computer and the GWDEMON
computer log in as that same user.

As an example, consider the following MHS setup:

Root workgroup: Gcomm
Default workgroup: Eng (Eng.Gcomm)

Gateway name: BBSGate
Default workgroup: BBSGate (BBSGate.Gcomm)
A user named: MBBS@BBSGate.Gcomm

The directory structures (as seen from both the BBS computer and the
GWDEMON host computer) are as follows:

MHS directory: H:\MHS
Gateway directory: H:\MHS\MAIL\GATES\BBSGATE
Outgoing message directory: G:\FROMBBS
Outgoing attachment directory: G:\FROMBBS\PARCEL
Incoming message directory: G:\INTOBBS
Incoming attachment directory: G:\INTOBBS\PARCEL

The Galacticomm-supplied INPOST.EXE, OUTPOST.EXE and BBSPCFG.EXE
(and the file OUTPOST.CFG created by BBSPCFG) all reside in:

H:\MHS\MAIL\GATES\BBSGATE\PUBLIC

and the BBS's offline Configuration options are set to:

GTWNME: BBSGate
OUTMSG: G:\FROMBBS
OUTFIL: G:\FROMBBS\PARCEL
INMSG: G:\INTOBBS

Setup Checklist Example
--------------- -------

The MHS gateway configuration should:
1 - have the same short and long gateway names BBSGate
2 - have a gateway command in the form
-F<outbound message directory> (no spaces) -FG:\FROMBBS
3 - have a default workgroup with the same short
and long names as the gateway BBSGate.Gcomm
4 - be declared as an SMF-70 gateway
5 - have a user declared on the gateway, in the
default workgroup, named MBBS MBBS@BBSGate.Gcomm

The gateway directory should:
6 - have a child subdirectory named PUBLIC which
contains INPOST.EXE, OUTPOST.EXE and BBSPCFG.EXE

The LAN Administrator should:
7 - run BBSPCFG in the PUBLIC directory, enter the
BBS's inbound and outbound message directories
8 - then OUTPOST.CFG will be in the PUBLIC directory

On the BBS, in Configuration Options (#4 from the Introductory Menu):
9 - ALWMHS = YES
10 - OUTMSG = outbound message directory G:\FROMBBS
11 - OUTFIL = outbound parcel directory G:\FROMBBS\PARCEL
12 - INMSG = inbound message directory G:\INTOBBS
13 - GTWNME = MHS gateway name BBSGate

The BBS computer should:
14 - be logged into the network
15 - have Read/Write/Create/Erase/Modify/Filescan
access to the inbound and outbound message
directories

The GWDEMON computer should:
16 - be logged into the network
17 - have same drive mappings as BBS computer
18 - have Read/Write/Create/Erase/Modify/Filescan
access to the BBS inbound and outbound message
directories
19 - have Read/Write/Create/Erase/Modify/Filescan
access to the gateway directory and all
sub-directories under the gateway directory
20 - have a line in its AUTOEXEC.BAT setting the
environment variable MV to the MHS directory
(a trailing backslash is always required)

OK Here is what I have and have been trying to manipulate it and it still doesn't work:

Windows 2K Server OS
Internal LAN IP 192.XXX.XXX.XXX
Static DSL IP 68.XXX.XXX.XXX
HTTP Port: 8080
SMTP Port: 2025
POP3 Port 110
All ports are opened on Port Forwarding through the Linksys Router

Also, I have an existing domain name XXX.COM that is being forwarded by Yahoo (registrar) to 68.XXX.XXX.XXX

I have no problem getting a new domain name or setting up additional settings on YAHOO or BellSouth or the Server. I just need to know what needs to be set.

smtp to 2025 or 25? i have pop3 on 110 smtp on 25 and i send/recieve fine and get my email through outlook on port 110.

Has anyone ever been able to get WG 3.2 internet email to work on an ISP that blocks port 25? I have to use port 465 with authentication. I know WG doesn't support authentication. Any ideas how to get around this? The only thing I need email from the BBS for is new user validations so it's not a big deal, but it would be nice to have.

Here's kind of a crazy idea. Would it be feasible for someone who knows their way around the source code (that wouldn't be me, btw) to tweek the galsmtp server a little so it could send login info to the isp for authentication?

Ok, here's where I stand right now. I've been working my butt off to get SMTP working. I now have it to the point where it's connecting and logging on to my ISP's server using a program called Stunnel, but when I try to send, it gives me an error message that the domain is not in their list of rcpthosts. From what I've read, that means they don't recognize my authentication certificate/key so I have been trying to get a key through a Certificate Authority they recognize. As soon as I am able to get this, I should be able to send using the WG SMTP server. I will post the setup instructions when I get it finished. Cross your fingers!
